Off-Grid Camping 101: Power & Water Explained 🏕️⚡💧
Off Grid - How long can I go?

Heading bush for a free camp in your Dirt Gear van? 🌿 Before you chase that perfect off-grid spot, it helps to understand how your power and water systems actually work — so your trip runs smoothly and your batteries (and patience!) last the distance.
⚡ Power — It All Depends on You!
How long your power lasts really comes down to one thing: how efficient you can be. A few key factors make all the difference.
☀️ How much sun are you getting? Full sun, overcast skies, or parking under shady trees all change how fast your solar panels can top up your batteries.
🔋 Batteries & solar. Most of our vans run 240 amp-hour batteries or more. Solar panels are there to top these up — remember, solar charging takes time, so factor that into your planning!

🧊 What’s actually running off the battery? Your fridge (some run on gas), lights, water pump, fans and TV all draw from the battery bank. With good daylight and smart power management, most vans will comfortably run 3–5 days off-grid — longer with great sun and good habits. Our Harvok and other larger-battery vans will stretch even further. For extended trips, you can top up via your car’s alternator while driving, or add a solar blanket, which is brilliant for chasing the sun and getting out of shady spots!
🔌 A few golden rules: Don’t charge phones or tablets off the van — save that for the car during travel days. Always flick off the van’s 12V isolation switch when it’s not in use. Open the windows and let the breeze do the cooling instead of running fans all day. And remember — run out of power and you’ve basically got a very expensive tent (you won’t even be able to flush the toilet!). 240V outlets and appliances like power points, air conditioning, the microwave and washing machine simply won’t work off-grid. Well, you are camping! 😄
💧 Water
All our vans carry around 200 litres of fresh water, filled with town water before delivery. This supplies your sink, shower and toilet — so it pays to use it wisely. A 10-minute shower can burn through a surprising amount of water fast. Most hot water systems run on 240V, gas or diesel, hold about 20 litres, and take 30–50 minutes to heat up — meaning one long shower can easily drain your entire hot water supply! Topping up is done via the water filler on the side of the van, and since most jerry cans hold 20 litres, refilling a full tank can mean quite a few trips back and forth. 🚰

🌾 Grey Water — Yes, a Grey Area
Most national parks in our area are fine with draining grey water onto vegetation, but always check with the park ranger or campsite first to be safe. Our vans carry 90 litres of grey water storage, so keep an eye on levels during longer stays. 🌳

Get to know your van’s power and water systems before you head off, pack a bit of common sense, and you’ll be set up for days of easy, off-grid living. If you’ve got any questions before your trip, give the Dirt Gear team a call — we’re always happy to help you plan the perfect off-grid adventure. 🚐✨
